New York Times: The right way to develop shale gas
Without proper action on methane, the social license to operate of the fracking industry sits on shaky ground. Literally. Our clients have been pressing natural gas companies to take action on methane risk for the last 2 years and this month we have shareholder proposals coming up for a vote at 4 companies' annual meetings asking them to:1) Measure methane impact with real time leak detection, 2) Report company leakage rates to investors (since no one really knows how much is leaking - but if it's over 2.3% natural gas is worse than coal from a global warming standpoint), and 3) Set reduction goals and install control technologies to reduce emissions and save companies and investors money. Leaked gas/methane is lost revenue. 4) Oh, and don't forget, you will reduce climate change risk! A win/win.
